Durban greets you differently to every other South African city. There’s salt in the air before you’ve even unpacked, the Indian Ocean sitting right there at the end of every road heading east, and a warmth temperature and otherwise that makes the whole place feel like it’s been expecting you. I’d come for a few days with no fixed agenda, which in Durban is the only sensible approach. By the second morning I was at the Golden Mile with uShaka Marine World ahead of me and a full day to spend however I wanted. I’d sorted my rands the night before opened Spendin, tapped ZAR, confirmed the amount, done before the hotel TV had finished its welcome screen loop. That’s the kind of preparation that doesn’t feel like preparation. Just funds ready, in the right currency, before the day needed them. I walked into uShaka with everything already settled. Nothing to figure out. Just Durb
